Western Chicken Turtle
The Western Chicken Turtle; a less-known species of turtle that can be found throughout Texas, Louisiana, sometimes being found in Mississippi and other states within the United States. These turtles are known to live primarily in lakes, ponds, and marshes; as well as the occasional cypress swamp.
These turtles range greatly in size from four to eleven inches long; with the female of the species being larger than the male. Of course, this is a well known fact for any Western Chicken Turtle lovers!
The species was named the Chicken Turtle for the length of their necks (IE: chicken necked). While they are omnivores; they are known to rely more heavily on vegetation in their diets once they begin to age. They will eat things such as insects, aquatic plants, carrion, and in most captive instances; specialized turtle pellets. |
