Turtles as pets

Turtles as you may already know make wonderful pets! With well over fifty different species of turtles throughout the United States and over two hundred and fifty species world-wide; they make a diverse yet well known pet.

When thinking of adopting a turtle, you should consider the different types of turtles available for adoption. All of which break down into basic types (or families) of turtles. While many of them are adoptable throughout the world, not all turtle species can be kept legally as pets. Some of these turtle types are:

  • Soft Shelled Turtles
  • Pond or Marsh Turtles
  • Snapping Turtles
  • Mud or Musk Turtles
  • Sea Turtles
  • Side Necked Turtles
  • Tortoises (or land-turtles)

Some of the most common turtles that are sold as pets are the box turtle and red eared slider; simply due to the fact that they are so easy to care for in comparison to some other species of turtles. They make a wonderful beginner turtle! However, if you want something a little more expert-driven you may want to consider a snapping turtle or soft shelled turtle for your home. Remember, once you have chosen to adopt a turtle as a pet; you must research the turtle species of your choice extensively. This will help you to ensure the overall health of your new turtle!
