Russian Tortoise

The Russian Tortoise (or Afghan tortoise, Steppe Tortoise, Four-toed Tortoise, or Horsfield’s tortoise) is one of the favorites of many tortoise owners. Whether it be their easy-care or the fact that their captive life span averages fifty years; these tortoises are great pets!
Russian Tortoises will range greatly in size, from four to eight inches long. Much like any other species of turtle or tortoises; the females are generally much larger than the males of the species.
This breed of tortoise requires lots of non-poisonous plants and vegetation. However, it is suggested that you avoid any fruits or grains as it can cause health problems in your Russian tortoise. You should feed them things such as:

  • Grasses
  • Weeds and plants (such as dandelions)
  • Leafy greens such as kale
  • Romaine lettuce
  • Collard greens
  • Escarole
  • Mustard greens
  • Hay

You can even out their diet by including a specially formulated tortoise food purchased from your reptile food retailer.
