Aquatic turtles are one of the most popular pet turtles in the United States and around the world. The most well known of those aquatic (or semi-aquatic) turtles being the red eared slider; along with African side-necked turtle, Chicken turtles, Painted turtles, Red-eared sliders, Spiny soft-shelled turtles, spotted turtles, argentine snake-necked turtles, matamata turtles, pig nosed turtles, and snapping turtles.
Unfortunately, due to their propensity for being carriers of salmonella; it is important for people to understand these beautiful animals. You must always know how to care for them, even as a new owner. It is of the utmost importance to seek proper care instructions for any turtle, especially aquatic turtles.

While most turtles aren’t the best pet for children; with the proper care of an adult it is possible for them to make a good starter-pet. With that said, you should always make sure that any child who handles an aquatic turtle washes their hands thoroughly afterward; which will help to prevent any chance of a salmonella infection.

Once you have chosen to get an aquatic turtle, you should then begin thinking about housing one. They require a pretty elaborate aquarium to live to the best of their ability in captivity. They will require a UV tank light, a minimum of a 20 gallon long tank, a landing tank, and water deep enough for them to swim in. A good filter is of the utmost importance to keeping an aquatic turtle healthy! Fortunately, all of these supplies can be found at retailers specializing in reptile and fish goods.
